Nigeria is set to make history with its first-ever participation in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO).
For many years, Nigerian students have represented the country at global mathematics competitions such as the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO). However, Nigeria has never previously participated in EGMO, a prestigious international mathematics competition designed to encourage and celebrate the participation of girls in mathematics.
That is about to change.
A Dream Taking Shape
Since its founding in 2019, Special Maths Academy (SMA) has remained committed to identifying and nurturing exceptional mathematical talent among young students, particularly girls and those from underserved communities.
One of the long-term visions of the academy has been to ensure that Nigerian girls are represented at major international mathematics competitions. Over the years, SMA has actively encouraged girls to develop confidence and excellence in mathematics through training, mentorship, and participation in Olympiad-level problem solving.
Through consistent effort, collaboration, and engagement with the international mathematics community, Nigeria has now been successfully registered to participate in EGMO, marking an important milestone for the country.
Preparations For The Journey
All necessary preparations have been completed for the Nigerian delegation. The selected participants and their team leaders are preparing to travel to France, where the upcoming edition of EGMO will take place. This participation represents a significant step forward in expanding opportunities for Nigerian girls in mathematics and strengthening the country’s presence in global academic competitions
A Moment of Pride
As the Nigerian team prepares for this historic debut, the entire SMA community is filled with excitement and pride. We are delighted that Nigeria will finally be represented at this important international platform.
We wish Nigeria and our participants the very best as they embark on this remarkable journey. May this be the beginning of many more achievements for Nigerian girls in mathematics.
SMA to the world.
