Special Maths Contest 2024/2025: A Celebration of Mathematical Excellence

Special Maths Academy recently concluded the much-anticipated 2025 Special Maths Contest (SMC), a remarkable event aimed at identifying and nurturing exceptional mathematical talent. The competition, which began virtually on November 23, 2024, saw over 1,700 students register, with 905 actively participating in the first round. Of these, 30 Nigerian students qualified for physical attendance in the second round, alongside 22 other Nigerian students who joined virtually. Additionally, 21 non-Nigerians qualified for the second round but participated online due to logistical limitations.

About Special Maths Academy

Special Maths Academy (SMA) is a leading organization in the field of mathematical education, dedicated to training and preparing students for Olympiad competitions and other high-level mathematical contests. The academy aims to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills in young minds, equipping them with the tools needed to excel in both academic and real-world challenges. SMA offers a variety of programs, including training camps, contests, and a newly developed video series, to reach students across the globe.

The Second Round of the Contest

The second round of the SMC was a six-day event, running from January 30 to February 4, 2025. This phase took place at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, where 30 Nigerian students attended physically. Students, along with their teachers or parents, were accommodated at a hotel in Abuja, where they were provided with meals three times daily throughout their stay.

Event Highlights

Arrival and Opening Ceremony
Participants arrived at the hotel on January 30, 2025. The following day, an opening ceremony was held at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, featuring a guest speaker, Dr. Umar Adam I., an AI researcher. Dr. Umar delivered a thought-provoking talk on the role of mathematics in the development of artificial intelligence and encouraged the students to remain dedicated to their mathematical journeys. His words were a source of inspiration for the young participants as they prepared for the contest.

The Contest Proper
The second-round contest took place on February 1 at the Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, accommodating both physical and virtual participants from across the globe. The contest lasted for four intense hours, with students pushing their mathematical skills to the limit in a bid to be crowned champions.

Excursion to Monoliza Amusement Park
On February 2, the physical attendees were treated to a fun-filled excursion to Monoliza Park in Abuja. The students and their chaperones enjoyed a day of recreation, complete with games, rides, and photo opportunities. The excursion provided a relaxing break for the participants and allowed them to bond with their peers.

Closing and Award Ceremony
The closing and award ceremony was a grand affair, attended by guests, dignitaries, and media representatives, including coverage by Daily Trust News Media. It was held at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja. Prizes were awarded to the top-performing students in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

The overall best student in the contest won $200, while the second-best received $150, and the third-best was awarded $100.

Nigerian Students’ Achievements
Among Nigerian participants, the overall best in Nigeria won $100 and a brand-new laptop. The second overall best Nigerian student received N100,000 and a laptop, while three students who tied for third place each won N50,000 and a laptop.

The Best Nigerian Girl
The highlight of the event was the crowning of the “Best Nigerian Girl,” who won N75,000 and the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad in France in 2026. She was crowned by the founder of Special Maths Academy, Dr. Abdulwahab Animoku, who commended her dedication and hard work.

The Future of Maths Education: Video Series
In his closing remarks, Dr. Abdulwahab Animoku introduced a new initiative by SMA – a video series designed to provide students with self-paced learning. This series was developed to accommodate a larger audience, as SMA recognizes that the number of students that can be physically trained at a time is limited. The top 15 students and the top 10 girls from the first round were awarded access to this video series for one year, free of charge. This initiative reflects SMA’s unwavering commitment to inspiring and empowering young girls to actively engage in mathematics competitions. By providing opportunities and support, we aim to nurture their talents, boost their confidence, and foster a generation of female mathematicians ready to excel on the global stage.

Dr. Wahab encouraged schools and the government to invest in this video series, which aims to democratize access to high-quality math education for all students, regardless of their geographic location or financial means.

The Special Maths Contest 2025 was a resounding success, showcasing the brilliance and potential of young mathematical minds from around the world. SMA remains committed to its mission of nurturing future mathematicians and problem-solvers, and the academy looks forward to hosting more editions of this prestigious contest in the years to come.
